Common/Maori name(s): Mountain houhere
Beautiful native deciduous tree that inhabits montane rivers and streams. Found throughout the southern alps and locally in the queenstown lakes. It is a mult-stemmed tree growing to 8 metres high by 6 metres wide. Leaves are thin and soft in an attractive heart shape with long tip. In summer it produces an abundance of white flowers that are adored by bees and all manner of insects. This tree will grow best with shelter from strong winds and access to fertile moist soil. If soil is moist this tree can tolerate full sun, however if soil is prone to drying then plant in a location with part shade. This tree would appreciate a good thick mulch with organic matter and an addition of compost to the planting hole in soils that lack organic matter. Very hardy to frost going to -15c.
