Common/Maori name(s): NZ Moss, nāereere
Scleranthus uniflorus is an evergreen cushion plant endemic to the South Island where it grows up to 1700 m.a.s.l. Its short bright green stems and leaves make this plant look very similar to moss. It grows in mounds 5cm high to 30cm wide. The leaves of Scleranthus uniflorus are small and close together creating a tighter mound than other Scleranthus. This plant is happy growing in full sun in fertile, well drained soil. It tolerates drier conditions than other scleranthus species but is not drought tolerant. If planting in poor or sandy soils add some compost to increase fertility and water retention. In dry, poor soils it is known to turn orange.
