Juncus sarophorus is a native large clump forming rush that creates structure and height in a planting. Growing between 1 - 2m, top third of growth curves horizontally. Leafless stems are evergreen, rigid and blue-green. Prefers wet or constantly moist conditions. Perfect for planting around the edges of unlined ponds, creeks or seepages. Flowers late spring followed by seeds in late summer. Brilliant plant for aquatic insects such a dragonflies and damselflies which use rushes to cling to while laying eggs. The stems and rhiozomes in the water create habitat for a whole host of aquatic creatures. Makes great habitat for wetland birds. Very effective for erosion control along stream edges. Improves water quality by trapping sediment and removing detrimentally high nutrients. Grows rapidly and will spread in suitable conditions. Juncus sarophrous is frost hardy and will tolerate periods of drying out. Very similar to Juncus edgariae but edgariae is more erect and brighter green with squatte rclumpers of flowers.
