Common/Maori name(s): Mountain toatoa, Celery pineĀ

Phyllocladus alpinus is a plant for plant enthusiasts. It is a slow growing evergreen shrubby bush that could get to 6m tall but is unlikely to make it past 3m. What looks like blueish grey leaves are actually flattened stems called phylloclades. They give the plant a stiffness but it is not rigid. It is in fact a conifer and will bear small cones less than 1cm on the end of its stems. An uncommon find in garden centres but it can be found throughout most of new zealand. It prefers cool moist growing conditions so stays mainly in the alpine/montane areas. Phyllocladus alpinus can tolerate drought, wind and frost. However, to get any good growth it will need moisture. Add compost when planting and mulch. It will grow in sun to part shade but in dry areas planting in some shade will help to preserve water.
