$10.50

Common/Maori name(s): Mountain fivefinger, orihouĀ

Pseudopanax colensoi are handsome small evergreen trees. They are multi-stemmed trees creating a canopy up to 8m tall. Five thick leaves are attached resembling a palm which is why it has the name five finger. Pseudopanax colensoi are endemic to New Zealand growing locally in the Queenstown lakes and extensively through New Zealand. They are scarce in the driest regions of inland Otago which may not have enough rainfall to sustain them. They are naturally found in montane areas growing 300 - 800m above sea level where they get a cooler winter. They grow in full sun or part shade and prefer an organic rich soil so use compost and mulch when planting. Frost hardy but some unhardened new leaves can get mild frost damage in unseasonal frosts. In spring they produce large clusters of creamy white flowers which will be covered with bees and insects these will go onto form dark purple berries in autumn/winter which many native birds will love. These plants are either male or female so at least two plants will need to be close to each other to produce viable fruit.
