Dutch White is a lavandin that will form a grey green evergreen shrub up to 110m high and 170m wide. It has long flower stems up to 75cm long with blunt pure white flower spikes 4-6cm long. Flowers will repeat from mid-summer to autumn. It has a strong lavender fragrance. Lavandins are naturally found in the south east of France 500-800m asl growing in calcareous soils in harsh and arid habitats. It needs full sun and well drained soils not needing. Lavandins are well suited to the growing conditions of Central Otago. They are hardy to -15c. If correct pruning is carried out lavandins can last 20+ years. Prune flower stems to the first leaves in autumn then when new growth begins in summer prune hard to 15cm below desired bush size. Always prune to wood with visible growth otherwise that stem may not regrow.
