A tough fast growing shrub that grows to 4m but will be smaller in very exposed places. Evergreen, small yellow-green leaves. The small vanilla scented white flowers born in late summer are pollinated by moths. Grows naturally on the coast of the northern south island. Tolerant of strong winds and poor soils. Needs full sun and well draining soil. May suffer if temperatures drop below minus 5 celsius.
