Common/Maori name(s): tawhairaunui, Red Beech 

This beech tree is generally found at lower altitudes than the mountain beech, prefering moist and fertile soils. Leaves are wavy and can turn red in winter when young. Larger than mt beech growing up to 30m high but only 5m wide. Very tough when established but young trees under 2m high need some care to protect from hard winds, drought, frost and full sun.
