Common/Maori name(s): HornbeamĀ
Common hedging plant. Will grow into a very large tree (25m) if not kept hedged. If kept below approximately 2m the Hornbeam will hold onto its leaves in winter even though it is deciduous when taller. This makes an interesting hedge that changes through the seasons and will also create a pleasant rustling sound as the wind flows through the dry leaves in winter. A tough tree that can take temperatures past minus 20c. They tolerate wind and poor soil and will grow in any location. Its one requirement is moist soil which can be provided with mulch and irrigation if needed.
